The action guide describes six in-school strategies that are proven to promote and support mental health and well-being.

2. Study 2 Results—Help-Seeking Behavior

While other programs measure intention, Coming Up for AIR measures actual behavior as students can ask for help for themselves or a friend. The follow-up support will be provided in 100 schools of Salyan and Kailali until June 2022. The model will feature developed modules and a screening tool to explain mental health issues and identify and give psychosocial support and services for individuals at risk. September 23, 2021 – The Department of Education (DepEd) is collaborating with Southeast Asian Ministers of Education Tropical Medicine and Public Health Network (SEAMEO TROPMED) to elevate awareness of learners and personnel on mental health programs and services. The program improves students’ mental health and reduces substance use, sexual risk behavior, and experiences of violence.

A number of challenges have been reported during the implementation of school-based mental health interventions which may negatively impact the interventions’ effectiveness. In principle, schools are an ideal place to implement such interventions, allowing for all children and young people to be reached, independently of their socioeconomic background or their parents’ attitudes towards mental health. The need for school-based mental health interventions The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention released a school mental health action guide to provide K‑12 schools with actionable strategies to help improve the mental health of their students. SMHP was implemented in 80 public schools where 150 teachers enrolled into the online programme resulting in improved teachers’ knowledge and skills about early identification and management of mental health problems in school children. School mental health interventions have also been shown to improve youth mental health across a number of indicators, including improved school attendance and educational attainment, and are highly adaptable to young people’s diverse and individual needs.

A similar combined measure of knowledge and attitudes is used in the current study and will be referred to as “mental health literacy”. These findings highlight the need for and benefits of early intervention. Neufeld et al. determined that adolescents with a mental health disorder who did not receive treatment were seven times as likely to have a recurrence by the age of 17 . Relying on 2021–2022 data reported by youth themselves, 21% identified with symptoms of anxiety and 17% with depression .
